Recruitment and Hiring

As we are approaching the end of our time in university, it is time for us to start preparing for our lives outside of school. It is daunting to think about a different lifestyle that's been the same for past 20 or so years, and everything that we have been preparing for is finally here. After graduation comes the search of our future profession. The tools necessary for success is to have a good resume, experience, and to ace the interviews. After talking to a few professionals in my Exploring Your Digital Portfolio class, I have also gained more knowledge in how to improve these tools.

Although it is imperative to excel in classes and aim for high grades, it is also important to be involved in your school and your community. Being in clubs, working in school, or being a leader in an organization are things that will make you stand out to companies. It is helpful to expand your work outside of your college or university, through things such as internships or community service organizations. These aspects show hirers that you are not only working hard for you education, but that you are well rounded and can be more than just an individual with good grades. It shows more of your character and what you are passionate about, as well as your work ethic. A good GPA and plentiful of activities and experience will make your resume more memorable than other's.

Good resumes are also short and get right to the point. They should only be one page, so it is important to condense any internships, work experience, or any interesting projects you've done. The bullets showcasing your skills should directly refer to job points, which will help secure you a position. In addition, many companies currently look at Linked In, which is a good site that is basically a digital resume and has people who can vouch for your skills.

For the interviewing process, we were told that there is usually a little test interviewers do. It is best to be honest and not make up answers, and just say that you do not know the answer instead of lying. After all, honesty is the best policy. Furthermore they are looking for people who are really passionate in their field, or someone who is really interested in their major and does little side projects. Interviewers also take notice of potential candidates that research the company beforehand, because that shows the person's interest in the company. Lastly, it is essential to always get back to the company with a follow up email thanking them for the opportunity.

In addition to obtaining great advice for the hiring process, I also was able to use Google Forms for the first time. It was incredibly easy to use and I was able to quickly make a survey. For every question I created, I could choose the format of the response, being multiple choice, short answer, or long answer. We created surveys in class for another individual, and the surveys were similar to little interviews. When the person answered the questions, there was a button that allowed me to put all the questions and answers into an excel sheet.

Lastly, we did our third and final App Smackdown in class. My application was called Muscular System 3D (anatomy). This app shows a three dimensional view of the skeletal system, and you can rotate and zoom in on the diagrams. It is unique because it has four diagrams, which are the head, the torso, the arm, and the leg. With each diagram, you can choose which muscles you want to see, and which muscles you want to omit. Each muscle also has a description, helpful to those studying anatomy and or physiology.
